The term Bonsai refers to the Japanese art form of growing Trees in small containers. It is derived from bon, meaning a pot with low sides and sai, which means planting. The word itself is the Japanese translation of the much earlier Chinese word penzai.
In English-speaking countries, the word is often used to refer to all miniatures that are grown in pots. Although it has become popularly-known as a Japanese form of art, the practice of growing Bonsai Trees actually originated from the Chinese tradition known as penjing.
